Adaptation Ways to Reduce Vulnerability
to Climate Change
Source: Climate Change 2001 Synthesis Report page 280-2
The tables on the following pages come from the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) summarizes the ways that different
sectors
can
adapt to climate change and reduce vulnerability to the harmful
effects.
The most vulnerable regions are highly exposed to the hazardous
effects and at the same time have limited ability to adapt (adaptive
capacity). The ability to cope with climate change depends on
wealth, scientific and technical knowledge, skills, infrastructure,
institutions and equity. So countries with poor economic resources,
low levels of technology, poor infrastructure, unstable institutions
and inequitable access to resources are highly vulnerable and
have little capacity to adapt to climate change.
Adaptation and adaptive capacity in different sectors:
a. Hydrology and Water Resources
b. Ecosystems
c. Coastal Zones and Marine Ecosystems
d. Human Settlements, Energy, and Industry
e. Insurance and other Financial Services
f. Human Health

Choose one of the regions identified by the IPCC. Research the
vulnerability and ability to cope with climate change for your
chosen region. Create a poster display to inform the viewer of
the special issues and concerns for the region.
The IPCC regions are Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand,
Europe, Latin America, North America, Polar Regions, Small Island
States.
You may want to choose a smaller region within one of the larger
regions for your research.
